The Rural Transformation Centre was set up in 1995 to serve communities around with issues related to sustainable agriculture, environmental protection, health enhancement through the promotion of natural medicine and other activities geared towards improving rural livelihoods. The organization started as a Common Initiative Group (CIG) with registration number NW/GP/05/96/1281 and later transformed into an association in 2014 with registration number 17/AR/E.26/A2/PS/118, legally recognized by the Government of Cameroon
It is a place where community members come to live, share ideas, learn and grow together towards improving their livelihoods. The association is apolitical, non-denominational and not for profit. We seek to empower the underprivileged rural populations who are mostly farmers especially women and youths.
ABOUT THE FOUNDER / COORDINATOR
The story about the creation of the Rural Transformation Centre all started when one Mr. Litika Boniface created a farm project in the early 90s and named it the Sharon Farms.
While as a young man in Cameroon, he was lucky to have found a job in Nigeria with Amey Road Stone (ARC) Construction Company and worked very hard day and night, to maintain and sustain his family. After a few years, he decided the hard labour should be a thing of the past and returned to Cameroon to set up a business.
He imported many goods by personally travelling to Nigeria under very harsh circumstances as whenever he needed to replenish his shop. He would be attacked on the way by armed bandits for money and even goods when returning from the market. This business eventually became very progressive, profitable, diversified, popular and by its name “Gateway shop”. Within a short period, this shop became one of the biggest shops around. At the time of inaugurating RTC, one could hear him say:
“While I had a very happy life with a huge family and mouths to feed, I was in trouble with my own self due to the fact that almost everyone within my community was poor. I never stopped thinking of what I could do to remedy the situation of poverty which is one of the root causes of lack of formal and non-formal education”
